Las representaciones artísticas de nuestro atlas quirúrgico fueron producidas por el Chair of the Biomedical Communications Graduate Program, así como por los estudiantes y los maestros que participan en ese programa.

La Southwestern Medical School fue galardonada con el primer grado mundial en ilustración médica en 1947. Hoy día, éste es uno de los cinco programas de ilustración médica acreditados en Estados Unidos. Para quienes son aceptados en el programa, la Southwestern School of Health Professions at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas ofrece un grado de Master of Arts in Biomedical Communication-Biomedical Illustration. El programa tiene una duración de dos años y actualmente se aceptan siete alumnos por año como máximo.

El programa se ofrece a través del Department of Biomedical Communications y los cursos son impartidos por el cuerpo académico de la University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences y la Southwestern School of Health Professions. El programa está acreditado por la Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs y la Association of Medical Illustrators. El señor Lewis E. Calver ha sido el Program Chairman desde 1980.

El programa es interdisciplinario y está diseñado para proveer oportunidades de perfeccionamiento de conocimientos y destrezas especiales en la aplicación de las artes de comunicación y la tecnología a las ciencias de la salud. El estudio de anatomía humana, biología celular, neurobiología y patología se combina con la experiencia en ilustración editorial, anatómica, quirúrgica y de publicidad; gráficos y animaciones por computadora, diseño gráfico, producción en multimedia, instrucción interactiva asistida por computadora y diseño instruccional. También pueden perfeccionarse destrezas adicionales en ilustración biológica, producción en medios tridimensionales, diseño de presentaciones y fotografía.
